Signs, Senses and Simulacra: "Name. Date. Title." at fordPROJECT
an essay by Grant Pooke, FRSA
Nov 7 - Dec 22, 2011
"Signs, Senses and Simulacra: Name. Date.Title. at ford/PROJECT"
Name. Date.Title. These seemingly blank, spare words capture gallery and exhibition signage the world over; the discrete labels of uniform size, colour and typeface. In the late modern age of international art fairs and biennales, they have become part of the curatorial lingua franca which has helped to shape the experience and reception of art practice for a generation of spectators.

Bonjour Tristesse: Tales of love, chance and the contingent. 'Summer Affair' at fordPROJECT
an essay by Grant Pooke FRSA
June 29 - August 10, 2011
In David Lean’s classic British film romance, Brief Encounter, (1945) adapted from Noёl Coward’s one-act play, Still Life, Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson play two thwarted lovers. Their chance meeting offers the prospect of an irrevocably changed life for both, but hemmed in by convention, guilt and family, the film’s title instead becomes the epitaph for their unrealised relationship. Among the reasons for its undeniable cinematic and visual power is the dynamic of shared choice and decision-making which the film dramatises. (... click title to read more)

Things Fall Apart: Entropy Dissolution and the Post Conceptual
an essay by Grant Pooke FRSA
May 4, 2011
“Life doesn’t last; art doesn’t last. It doesn’t matter…” (Eva Hesse)
“In the arts, the desire to find new things to say and new ways of saying them is the source of all life and interest...Beauty, like order, occurs in many places in this world, but only as a local and temporary fight against the Niagara of increasing entropy.” (Norbert Wiener)
The group exhibition Heading for a Fall: the Art of Entropy presents work by four emerging New York based artists: Lisha Bai, Lucy Indiana Dodd, Alexander May and Naama Tsabar. Collectively, their practice variously explores themes of ‘entropy, alteration, and deformation’, subjects which are mediated through the use and combination of wide-ranging materials and hybrid assemblages
